Carlos S. Alvarado, PhD, Research Fellow, Parapsychology Foundation.
I hope the readers will find this list of books useful for Christmas.
These are old books about psychical research published between the early 1900s and the late 1950s. The writings of individuals such as William Barrett, Raynor Johnson, Joseph Maxwell, Ricardo Musso, Charles Richet, and others, are particularly interesting and informative.
The books are online here: GB (Google Books https://books.google.com/); HT (Hathi Trust https://www.hathitrust.org/); IA (Internet Archive https://archive.org/); IAPSOP (International Association for the Preservation of Spiritualist and Occult Periodicals http://iapsop.com/); and SurvivalAfterDeath | CienciasPsíquicas (http://survivalafterdeath.blogspot.com/).

In the 1980s and ’90s, one of my hobbies was to go browse through the stacks at Strands’ book store in NYC and also at the Barnes & Noble Annex on 17th Street (?) and 5th Avenue to look for bargains and, in particular, old books on psychical research that could be bought at reasonable prices. One of the books that I once picked up at the Annex for $2.98 -and one of my most treasured possessions- is a copy of Crawford’s 1919 “The Reality of Psychic Phenomena”. Inscribed inside the front cover of this book is a note stating “Property of George H. Hyslop …” followed by an address in White Plains, NY. and the date, January 14, 1921. I was thrilled to discover some time later that George was the son of famous psychical researcher James H. Hyslop. In all, I probably had picked up about a dozen or so books over the years dating back to the 20s and earlier. My interest in getting these books was mainly for their content and not necessarily for their value as original editions, printings, etc., though I admit that there is something special to be able to hold and read a book like Crawford’s given its ownership lineage :).
Anyway, I continue to be amazed at the amount of such old literature that is not only so easily available now via the Internet, but that it is mostly FREE!. So, thank you, Carlos, for posting these reminders. It is gratifying to know that there such a rich and valuable literature that is available to anyone with an internet connection. THANK YOU!!
May you, Nancy, and the rest of your respective families and followers of this blog have a joyous holiday season.
Hello Miguel.
I hope you can find many books you are interested in.
If you want to find specific old books let me know, I will get you addresses if I can.
I am finishing an article about online articles and books about several topics. This is over 70 pages long for the period 19th century to 1950s. But most of the references are before 1923/1924. I have about 400 references in the list.
A good Christmas for you and other readers.
Carlos
Wonderful, Carlos! I look forward to reading the article. And thanks for the offer about locating specific books; I’ll keep in mind.
The International Association for the Preservation of Spiritualist and Occult Periodicals has a book called The Mediumship of Jack Webber. Lots of cool pictures in the back. But even more than books, I like downloading old issues of Light. Unfortunately some of the issues available at the above site are not very readable while others appear to have been professionally scanned and can be easily read. One other book that is fantastic is Lord Adare’s account of his experiences with D.D. Home. Merry Christmas to you Carlos and thank you for all you do. I enjoyed hearing your cat on New Thinking Allowed. 🐱
Hello Jim.
Thanks for the comments.
Good points.
I like to check many issues of Light: http://iapsop.com/archive/materials/light/ and of the place you mention.
This place has many fascinating things.
My best wishes for this Christmas.
Carlos
